LAUPAHOEHOE COMMUNITY PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL  COMMUNITY EDUCATION WOOD SHOP

Picture
The class includes 1 session of  instruction and 5 sessions of hands on learning with master woodworker Peter Zirolli, and  former woodshop teacher Jim Braun.  Don Bryan also assists.

Learning sessions are first on tool operation and tool safety. We give instruction on chop saw, jointer, planer, table saw, large band saw, small band saw, lathe, stationary belt and disk sander. We also teach various handheld power tools and hand tools as need arises.

Don teaches a session on wood tech where you learn how wood behaves (or misbehaves)  and how to use its strengths and accommodate its frailties.

You will select a project to build during class.  With a student teacher ratio of about 3 to 1, much of the learning happens as student and instructor huddle over a project and work out the next steps. The instructors are there because they enjoy this creative process and hearing new ideas and challenges from students.

People seem to have a really good time with this.  Saturday morning wood shop is a happy room. Class meets Saturdays from 8am to noon LCPCS woodshop, the Mauka most building on LCPCS camps.

Materials

The shop provides most small supplies such as glues and sandpapers, and some scrap wood for practice and trials cuts. Students supply the project lumber.  A list of sources in enclosed.
